Global Business Environment Of Greenpeace †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about theGlobal Business Environment Of Greenpeace. Answer: Identification of Issues Greenpeace is a non-governmental environmental organization (greenpeace.org 2018). On the other hand, World Trade Organization, commonly known as WTO, is an intergovernmental organization involves in regulating international trade (wto.org 2018). It can be seen that Greenpeace has made some major criticism about WTO. These criticisms are discussed below: According to Greenpeace, WTO is considered as a major tool for the rich and powerful people and the members of this organization use to apply different kinds of negative techniques to force developing countries for making bad deals for them. Thus, it can be said that the rich and powerful people control WTO for their own interests (greenpeace.org 2018). It needs to be mentioned that the majority portion of the members of WTO belong from Asia Pacific, Africa and Latin America; but these members get little chance to say anything in the decisions taken by WTO. This is because these countries do not have many to offer from their weak economy. Surprisingly, the members of WTO from these countries do not even get invitation for the important meetings of WTO (greenpeace.org 2018). As per Greenpeace, the influence of narrow corporate interest can be seen on the operations of WTO. Under WTO, the large business corporations are driven by profit; environmental and social development has little influence on WTO unless they bring any financial benefits to WTO. This is a proof of the narrow corporate interest of WTO. Greenpeace has also criticized on the fact that WTO has blocked many members developing countries from the access of vital medicines in spite of the agreement of these countries in Doha in the year 2001 (greenpeace.org 2018). The main reason is that this particular agreement has reduced the revenue of the pharmaceutical companies in billions. Due to this, there has been major pressure on European Union (EU) from the agricultural industry for the subsidy programs. Thus, it can be seen that the operations of WTO agreements bringing more profits for the big companies. It needs to be mentioned that there are many other reasons for which Greenpeace has critic ized WTO (greenpeace.org 2018). Assessment of Issues From the above discussion, it can be seen that WTO is doing no good for the member developing countries where the main objective of WTO of is to bring development in these countries by developing trade. From the above discussion, it can be assessed that there is not any development in trade in the developing countries as WTO is creating hindrances in the way of progress in order to fulfill their own interest. Another negative point is to deter the developing countries from using medicines as a result of the agreement. Moreover, the economically developed countries of WTO are creating obstacles for the developing countries. Thus, based on the above assessment of the criticism of Greenpeace, there is not scope to disagree with the above points due to the fact that the developed member countries of WTO is fulfilling their own interest by deterring the developing countries. Suggestions Based on the above discussion, the following suggestions are made: It is suggested that WTO needs to allow the member developing countries in the major decision-making processes so that they can pitch their own views related to the problems they are facing. It is suggested that WTO must allow the member developing countries to use the medicine as a result of the Doha agreement. It is suggested that WTO should include environmental as well as social development aspects in their agendas. It is suggested to WTO to develop strategies for the overall development of the developing countries by introducing various trade strategies for them. References Greenpeace International.
